Physical fitness

The operational role of a firefighter can be physically, emotionally and mentally demanding so you have to ask yourself the question, “Are You Fit to be a firefighter?”.
Physical Fitness is an extremely important component of both physical and mental wellbeing and essential in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it can be defined by a number of fitness components such as aerobic fitness (endurance/stamina), muscular strength, muscular endurance, agility etc.
A firefighter requires all round physical fitness to allow them to function safely in a range of difficult and dangerous environments, involving extremes of heat and cold, working at height, working in dark confined spaces, working in or near water, ice and mud etc. so you have to be fit to perform these tasks without suffering undue fatigue which could place yourself, your colleagues and the public at risk.

The specific fitness standard for UK firefighters is Aerobic Fitness (VO2Max), which is measured by the Chester step test. This test measures the aerobic fitness level of our employees. Your local gym or fitness instructor will be able to advise you on how this achieved.

In addition to being physically fit, you must also be medically fit. We value employees’ regular and good attendance at work and therefore part of our selection process will include a comprehensive medical examination.
