
The selection process for the firefighters role is detailed below. Although these processes do not give specific details of selection methods used, they will give you an idea of what to expect when applying.
1. Online Application Form – the application is in eight parts.
Part 1 – Pre-Screening Questions
This section will look at certain aspects of being a firefighter, which is not commonly found in other jobs.
Part 2 – Questions
This section covers general eligibility criteria for the job.
Part 3 – Application Questions
The section covers situations that you have experienced in the past and seeks to identify the situation, your role and final outcome.
Part 4 - Work Experience
This section looks at you’re your career history along with details on specific responsibilities, experience and knowledge gained.
Part 5 - Main Details
The section collates your personal details.
Part 6 – References
The section is used to enter details of people willing to provide you a reference.
Part 7 - Existing Employee
If you are a serving member of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue you will be required enter this information here.
Part 8 - Equal Opportunities
This section will capture ethnic information along with details relating to disability, sickness and medical conditions affecting your performance at work. Some of these questions are for monitoring purposes only and this is specified where appropriate.
You must obtain the required standards to progress to the Psychometric Tests.
2. Psychometric Test – this written test is in four parts and consists of Situational Awareness and Problem Solving, Understanding Information and Working With Numbers and the National Firefighter Questionnaire.
You must obtain the required standards to progress to the Physical Tests.
3. Physical Tests – there are six tests you need to complete, these consist of:
• Ladder Climb – designed to assess confidence at heights.
• Casualty Evacuation – designed to assess upper and lower body strength and co-ordination.
• Ladder Lift - designed to assess upper and lower body strength and co-ordination.
• Enclosed Space –designed to assess confidence agility and stamina.
• Equipment Assembly – designed to assess manual dexterity.
• Equipment Carry – designed to assess upper and lower body strength and co-ordination.
You must successfully pass each test before moving onto the next test and must successfully complete all tests to progress to the interview stage.
4. Interview – the interview will again be PQA based and will assess your experiences in relation to the attributes required. The interview will last approximately 1 hour.
5. Medical – this will assess your general health and fitness against the required standards and includes an aerobic fitness test and an audio and eye test. You will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire at this stage to give our Occupational Health advisors some background information on your health.
6. Reference Check – the reference check consists of checking the referees supplied by you, for such things as character, absence etc.
7. Criminal Convictions Check – You will be required to complete a criminal convictions form detailing any history of certain convictions where applicable. You will also complete a Disclosure Scotland Form, which will provide us with detailed information on any past criminal convictions.
The firefighter role normally receives an exceptional level of interest and as you will see, this is a comprehensive process and takes time to do consider all applications fairly and effectively. We will be recruiting firefighters on a phased basis over the next 2 years. This might mean that the next phase of the process will start in the summer season. However, we will ensure that we keep you updated on the progress of your application.
