The firefighters role has been developed through the years in order to meet the changing demands of the fire and rescue service and also assist the community in becoming a safer place to live, work and visit.
Today, the firefighter’s role is aimed more at fire prevention than firefighting therefore the education of the public is a major part of a firefighter’s daily role. This would involve anything from fitting smoke alarms to educating school children on fire prevention and the dangers of fire. Meeting your obligations will involve a huge range of activities other than firefighting. You will attend emergencies involving road traffic collisions, chemical spillages and other situations requiring emergency rescue.
You will also assist other emergency organisations such as Police, Ambulance and Coastguard Services as and when their specialist skills are required. Other duties include, fire safety inspections of commercial and industrial premises; provision of fire safety advice; community group visits and more. Training, both theoretical and practical, forms a significant part of the daily routine.
